November 12: Taylor's Red Drops, Web Is Proposed
November 12 pairs a Friday-night album drop with a very quiet piece of paperwork. In 2021, a re-recorded album came with a song longer than most TV sitcom cold opens. In 1990, two engineers at a Swiss physics lab put a proposal on paper for a system that would eventually swallow everybody's free time. The birthdays are strong too, led by a Barbie-era Ken and a Les Mis Oscar winner.
ON THE CHARTS: Red (Taylor's Version)
Five years ago today, on November 12, 2021, Taylor Swift released Red (Taylor's Version), a 30-track re-recording of her 2012 album. The track everyone was waiting for was the 10-minute version of “All Too Well,” a song that had originally run about five and a half minutes.
It was Swift's second re-recorded album, following Fearless (Taylor's Version) that April, part of her project to own the masters of her early catalog. The original Red had arrived on October 22, 2012, so this release came just over nine years later. Besides the re-recorded songs, it added tracks labeled “From the Vault,” material that hadn't made the original.
The long “All Too Well” became the centerpiece of the rollout, and it came with a short film Swift wrote and directed, starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O'Brien. The film debuted the same day. Then there was the chart result: the song later debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100, which made it the longest song ever to top that chart.

PRESS START: The Web Is Proposed
On November 12, 1990, Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau submitted a formal proposal at CERN titled “WorldWideWeb: Proposal for a HyperText Project.” The name that stuck for the whole internet-as-we-live-it was right there in the title, attached to a plan for linked documents on a physics lab's computers.
Berners-Lee had first floated the idea in a memo in March 1989. The 1990 version was more concrete, laying out how researchers could read and link documents across different machines. By the end of that year, a first browser and server were running at CERN.
It wasn't a cultural event that day. Nobody lined up for it. But it set up everything that came next: the web opened to the public in 1991, and in April 1993 CERN put the underlying software in the public domain, which let anyone build on it. Every viral video, meme and fan forum traces back to a plan that looked like lab paperwork.
