November 25: Planes Trains Opens, Band Aid Records

OPENING WEEKEND: Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Planes, Trains and Automobiles opened in US theaters on Wednesday, November 25, 1987, timed to the Thanksgiving holiday. The film earned its R rating largely from one scene: Steve Martin's tirade at a car rental counter, a nearly unbroken stream of one particular four-letter word. Hughes reportedly refused to trim it, and the scene became the most quoted in the film.
The setup is simple. Martin plays Neal Page, an uptight advertising executive trying to get from New York to Chicago for Thanksgiving. John Candy plays Del Griffith, a shower-curtain-ring salesman who keeps ending up in the next seat, the next motel bed, and the next disaster. Hughes, who wrote and directed, was best known then for teen comedies like Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club, and this was a deliberate step toward adult characters.
Critics were warm rather than ecstatic, and the film did solid holiday business. Its real life came afterward, on cable and home video, where it became a fixture of every Thanksgiving week. The quiet final stretch, in which Neal learns something about Del, is why people rewatch it. Candy's performance is the reason it still gets a lump in the throat.

THE MOMENT: Band Aid Records Its Single
On Sunday, November 25, 1984, a crowd of British and Irish pop stars crowded into Sarm West Studios in London and recorded Do They Know It's Christmas? in a single day. Boy George, the last of the big names to arrive, reportedly flew in from New York and laid down his vocal after the others had finished.
The project was Bob Geldof's response to news reports about famine in Ethiopia. He wrote the song with Midge Ure of Ultravox, who produced it. The lineup, billed as Band Aid, included members of Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Culture Club and U2, along with Sting, Phil Collins and George Michael.
The single was released on December 3, 1984, and became the UK Christmas No. 1. It inspired the American effort We Are the World a few months later, and Live Aid in July 1985. The record has been re-recorded several times since, with new lineups.
