November 22: Toy Story Opens, With the Beatles Lands

OPENING WEEKEND: Toy Story
Toy Story opened in US theaters on Wednesday, November 22, 1995, 31 years ago today, as the first feature film made entirely with computer animation. Pixar, then a small studio, made it for Disney, with Tom Hanks voicing the cowboy Woody and Tim Allen voicing the space ranger Buzz Lightyear.
The idea grew out of Tin Toy, a Pixar short from 1988 that won the Academy Award for animated short film. Early story drafts went through major changes: one treatment had Woody as a ventriloquist dummy, and the film's central friction between a favorite toy and a shiny newcomer came together over a long rewrite process.
It opened before Thanksgiving, a prime family-moviegoing slot, and went on to be the top-grossing film of 1995 in the US. The following year, the Academy gave John Lasseter a Special Achievement Oscar for it. Every Pixar feature since traces back to this one, and so does the long list of studios that decided hand-drawn was no longer the only way to do a cartoon.

ON THE CHARTS: With the Beatles
With the Beatles was released in the UK on Friday, November 22, 1963, and its cover is the best-known thing about it: Robert Freeman's black-and-white portrait of the four band members in dark turtlenecks, each face half in shadow. Freeman shot it at a hotel in Bournemouth, and the design was striking enough that no title or band name was needed beyond a small caption.
The album followed Please Please Me by eight months and ran 14 tracks, including the original “All My Loving,” George Harrison's first song on a Beatles album, “Don't Bother Me,” and covers of Motown and rock and roll records they had played in clubs. It topped the UK album chart and stayed there for 21 weeks.
Capitol in the US reshuffled the tracks and released the material as Meet the Beatles! in January 1964, which is why American listeners often know the songs from a different record. In Britain, the half-shadowed cover has been copied for decades, most visibly by the Beatles-inspired sleeves of many later groups.
