November 21: Ocarina of Time Ships, Mockingjay Opens
November 21 has a Nintendo landmark, a blockbuster franchise finale in the making, and a birthday for one of pop music's most singular voices. Link got his time-traveling ocarina in 1998, Katniss Everdeen went to war on screen in 2014, and Björk, the Guess Who from your inbox, turns 61. Here is the full accounting of the date, starting with the game.
PRESS START: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time went on sale in Japan on November 21, 1998, two days before its North American release on November 23. The hook was the one in its title: a young Link plays an ocarina to call up songs, open doors and travel seven years through time, from a child's world to a ruined adult one.
It shipped on a 256-megabit cartridge, about 32 megabytes, which was big for the Nintendo 64 and was the machine's way of fitting a full 3D Hyrule on a cart instead of a disc. Shigeru Miyamoto and his team had spent years on it, partly teaching themselves how a third-person camera and a sword fight should work in three dimensions.
The solution was Z-targeting, a button that locks the camera onto an enemy so Link circles it. Nearly every action-adventure game since has borrowed the idea in some form. Reviewers treated the game as a new benchmark, and it holds a Metacritic score of 99, among the highest the site has recorded. Players who waited for the cartridge in 1998 were buying more than a sequel. They were buying the template for the next two decades of the genre.
Born On This Day
Björk
BORN 1965 · TURNS 61
The Icelandic singer first broke through with the Sugarcubes in the late 1980s, then went solo with the 1993 album Debut. She acted in Lars von Trier's Dancer in the Dark, which earned her the best actress prize at Cannes in 2000, and a year later arrived at the Oscars in a swan dress that people still discuss. Her albums have never repeated one another.
Goldie Hawn
BORN 1945 · TURNS 81
Hawn became a star as the giggling blonde on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, then won the Oscar for best supporting actress for Cactus Flower in 1969. She later produced her own hits, including Private Benjamin, and made Overboard and Death Becomes Her.
Troy Aikman
BORN 1966 · TURNS 60
The quarterback led the Dallas Cowboys to three Super Bowl wins in the 1990s and was named MVP of Super Bowl XXVII. He then moved to the broadcast booth, where he has called games on Fox and ESPN and become one of the sport's best-known analysts.

BORN 1985 · TURNS 41

BORN 1944 · WOULD HAVE BEEN 82
Ramis, who died in 2014, wrote and acted in Ghostbusters as Egon Spengler and co-wrote Animal House and Stripes. He also directed Caddyshack and Groundhog Day, making him one of the architects of modern screen comedy.
OPENING WEEKEND: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 opened in US theaters on Friday, November 21, 2014. The withheld detail is in the title: Lionsgate split Suzanne Collins's final novel into two films, a move borrowed from the Harry Potter and Twilight playbooks, with Part 2 following on November 20, 2015.
The split changed the series. Instead of another arena, the film spends its time on propaganda, with Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss filming rebel videos in District 13. Critics were divided on whether a story that depends on waiting and messaging could carry a whole movie. Francis Lawrence directed, and the cast included Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson and Donald Sutherland.
The film was also the last in the series with Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died in February 2014 before filming ended, and the rest of his role was completed for Part 2. The song The Hanging Tree, sung by Lawrence on screen, became a hit of its own.
Meanwhile…

2007The Mist, Frank Darabont's Stephen King adaptation set in a supermarket, opened the same day.
2012DreamWorks Animation's Rise of the Guardians, with Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny as action heroes, opened November 21.
2012Ang Lee's Life of Pi, about a boy and a tiger on a lifeboat, also arrived in US theaters on November 21 and later won four Oscars.
That is November 21: a cartridge that rewrote 3D game design, a franchise finale split in two, and a birthday for the woman in the swan dress. Come back tomorrow afternoon for the next date, and tell a friend who still remembers where they were when they first played the Ocarina.
