Landing on a moving target about 2.5 miles wide, hundreds of millions of miles away, was never going to be tidy. On Nov. 12, 2014, the European Space Agency's Rosetta mission attempted it anyway, releasing its Philae lander toward Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and then waiting for news that took nearly half an hour to cross the void.
Seven Hours Down
Rosetta had launched in 2004 and spent a decade looping through the inner solar system before catching up with 67P in August 2014. On the morning of Nov. 12, it released Philae, a lander of roughly 100 kilograms, and the probe began a descent of about seven hours with no way to steer. Mission controllers in Darmstadt, Germany, could only watch and wait, since radio signals took more than 28 minutes to reach Earth. Touchdown came at about 15:34 UTC, and confirmation arrived shortly after 16:00. Control rooms erupted, and the landing was the first time a spacecraft had set down on a comet's surface. The celebration was brief, however. Philae's ice screws and harpoons, meant to anchor it in the weak gravity, had not done their job, and the data soon showed the lander had not stayed put. A machine built to cling to a comet had, for a few hours, merely brushed against one.
Philae rebounded off the surface, drifted for roughly two hours, touched down again, hopped a second time, and finally settled at around 17:32 UTC, tilted in the shadow of a cliff where its solar panels received little sunlight. Even so, it ran its instruments and sent back data before its primary battery drained after about 64 hours. It briefly woke in June 2015 as the comet neared the Sun, then fell silent for good. Its location stayed a mystery until Rosetta's camera spotted it wedged in a dark crevice in September 2016, just before Rosetta itself was deliberately landed on the comet to end the mission. The lander that missed its mark had at least ended up somewhere worth looking.
