September 18: Studio 60 Premieres, Ronaldo Turns 50

Ronaldo
1976 · TURNS 50
The Brazilian striker won two World Cups and reshaped what a center forward could do with the ball at his feet, from Cruzeiro through PSV, Barcelona, Inter, Real Madrid, and Milan. Injuries stole years from his prime, but the highlight reel that survives still gets passed around.
Jada Pinkett Smith
1971 · TURNS 55
She built a career on range — sci-fi action in The Matrix Reloaded, drama in Girls Trip's sister film Set It Off, and a rock band, Wicked Wisdom, on the side. She's also spent two decades in the celebrity spotlight in ways that go well beyond her filmography.
James Marsden
1973 · TURNS 53
He's the guy who's played Cyclops opposite Wolverine, the Prince in Enchanted, and the doomed rival in 27 Dresses — a career built on being extremely likable in the role just below the lead. Sonic the Hedgehog gave him a whole new fanbase decades into his run.
Aisha Tyler
1970 · TURNS 56
Stand-up comic, Friends guest star, Archer voice actress, and the first woman to host E3's live broadcast — she's worked every corner of entertainment without ever picking a single lane. Her podcast Girl on Guy ran for years before podcasting became mandatory for every celebrity.
Frankie Avalon
1940 · TURNS 86
A teen idol before the term existed, he scored chart-topping singles like Venus and Why in the late '50s, then spent the following decade starring in a string of beach party movies opposite Annette Funicello that basically invented the summer teen comedy.
PRIME TIME: Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip Premieres
NBC didn't just launch a show on September 18, 2006 — it launched an event. Aaron Sorkin, fresh off The West Wing, teamed with director Thomas Schlamme for a backstage drama about a fictional late-night sketch show, starring Matthew Perry and Bradley Whitford as writing partners trying to save it from cancellation. The premiere drew strong numbers and rapturous trade press coverage, positioned as NBC's flagship answer to its own struggling Thursday lineup.
It also arrived four months after 30 Rock, Tina Fey's comedic take on nearly the same premise, got picked up by the same network — an accidental head-to-head that history has judged decisively. Studio 60's ratings slid fast, weighed down by Sorkin's talky monologues about the sanctity of live comedy and a tone critics found preachy rather than funny. NBC pulled it after one season and 22 episodes.
Twenty years later, it's remembered less as a show people watched than as a case study — proof that prestige pedigree doesn't guarantee an audience, and that 30 Rock, the scrappier sibling, was the one that lasted.
THE MOMENT: Jimi Hendrix Dies at 27
Jimi Hendrix was found unresponsive in a London hotel room on the morning of September 18, 1970, and pronounced dead shortly after. He was 27, and had spent barely four years as a recording artist — from his 1966 arrival in London to that morning, he'd released just three studio albums with the Experience, plus the sprawling Electric Ladyland, before a coroner's inquest ultimately attributed the death to asphyxiation.
What made the loss land so hard wasn't just the music already released — it was how unfinished the picture felt. Hendrix had been in the studio building his own Electric Lady facility in New York, working on material that would eventually surface piecemeal on posthumous releases for years afterward, none of it quite capturing what he might have done with more time.
His death, coming a little over two weeks after his final performance at the Isle of Wight Festival, cemented the 27 Club as a grim shorthand in rock history and left his catalog of guitar innovation as the primary evidence of what was lost.
