November 9: Halo 2 Ships, Rolling Stone Debuts
November 9 has a video game that sent people to stores at midnight and a magazine that started on a shoestring. Halo 2 went on sale in 2004, and Rolling Stone published its first issue in 1967. The Hulk from the 1970s TV series turns 75, and a few other familiar faces have birthdays too. Here is the full accounting of the day.
PRESS START: Halo 2
Halo 2 went on sale in North America on November 9, 2004, and its ending is what people remember arguing about. The story stops in the middle of the action, with Master Chief heading for Earth. The finish had to wait for Halo 3, which arrived in 2007.
The first game had been the reason many people bought an original Xbox, so the sequel carried real weight. Microsoft reported that Halo 2 took in about $125 million in its first 24 hours, a figure that put a game launch in the same conversation as a big film opening weekend. Stores held midnight openings, and lines formed outside shops that rarely saw a crowd.
The bigger change was online. Halo 2 ran on Xbox Live with matchmaking, so players could find a game in minutes instead of arranging one with friends. It helped make playing console shooters online an ordinary habit, and it kept a lot of living rooms busy for years.

THE MOMENT: Rolling Stone Debuts
The first issue of Rolling Stone, dated November 9, 1967, had John Lennon on the cover. The photo was a still of him in costume for the film How I Won the War, which was an odd choice for a new music paper. It sold for 25 cents.
Jann Wenner started the magazine in San Francisco at age 21, with veteran music critic Ralph J. Gleason as an early partner. It looked like a newspaper, printed on newsprint, and it took rock seriously as culture, with interviews, album reviews and reporting on the business side. Most mainstream magazines treated pop music as a teen fad.
That approach shaped how critics, labels and fans talked about records for decades. Getting on the cover became a measure of arrival for musicians, and later the title expanded into film, television and politics.
