November 8: HBO Signs On, 8 Mile Opens

PRIME TIME: HBO Signs On
On November 8, 1972, Home Box Office made its first broadcast, and its opening night was a movie and a hockey game. Subscribers in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, saw the 1969 musical Sweet Charity, followed by a live NHL game between the New York Rangers and the Pittsburgh Penguins. It is the first program lineup of what became the most influential premium channel in American television.
The service came from Charles Dolan's Sterling Manhattan Cable, which had wired parts of New York City. Dolan's idea was to send a movie or sporting event to subscribers who paid extra for it, with no commercials. The first night reached only a few hundred homes in the Wilkes-Barre area, delivered by a cable system in Pennsylvania. Early growth was slow, and it was not until HBO began distributing programming by satellite in 1975, starting with the “Thrilla in Manila” boxing match, that it became a national service.
From there the channel moved from showing other people's movies to making its own, and eventually became the home of prestige drama. Its slogan about not being television came decades later, but the idea was already there on night one: pay a little more and get something the networks would not show you.

OPENING WEEKEND: 8 Mile
On Friday, November 8, 2002, 8 Mile opened in US theaters and went to No. 1 at the box office, with a debut north of $50 million. The film starred Eminem in a loosely autobiographical story of a Detroit rapper, and its theme song, “Lose Yourself,” ended up winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Directed by Curtis Hanson, who had made L.A. Confidential, the film was shot on location in Detroit. Kim Basinger, Brittany Murphy and Mekhi Phifer filled out the cast. Critics who expected a vanity project instead praised a small, grim drama about work, family and a freestyle battle in a club.
“Lose Yourself” spent 12 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 and won the Oscar in 2003, the first rap song to take that prize. Eminem did not attend the ceremony. The film's title comes from the road that divides Detroit from its wealthier northern suburbs.
