November 4: Beatles Rattle Jewelry, Chicken Little Opens

November 4 has a quiet reputation, but it holds one of the best stage jokes in British pop history and a turning point in Disney animation. In 1963, four young men from Liverpool played for royalty and got away with a line that was only half a joke. In 2005, a studio that had just parted ways with its closest animation partner opened its first all-CG feature. Add a Dallas Buyers Club Oscar winner's birthday, and you have a full day.
THE MOMENT: The Beatles at the Royal Variety Performance
On November 4, 1963, at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London, John Lennon told the audience that those in the cheaper seats could clap, and everyone else could “rattle your jewellery.” The room included the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret, and the line was aimed squarely at them.
The Beatles were the closing act on a bill of established variety performers, and their short set had four songs: “From Me to You,” “She Loves You,” “Till There Was You” and “Twist and Shout.” Lennon had reportedly planned a sharper version of the joke, and the softened one landed with polite laughter in the royal box.
The show was recorded for television and aired days later, which carried the band's name well beyond the theatre. British papers had already been using the word Beatlemania, but the Royal Variety appearance tied the band to the establishment it seemed to be tweaking. It was a public sign that the group could win over audiences far outside its teenage fan base, and the jewelry line is still the part people quote.

OPENING WEEKEND: Chicken Little
When Chicken Little opened in US theaters on November 4, 2005, it was the first fully computer-animated feature Disney made entirely in-house, without Pixar. It was also released in Disney Digital 3-D at select theaters, an early showcase for the format.
Directed by Mark Dindal, it cast Zach Braff as a small acorn-panicked bird who convinces his town the sky is falling, and the film updated the old fable with an alien invasion plot. Disney had lost its Pixar partnership as contract talks broke down, and Chicken Little was the studio's proof that it could stand on its own in CG.
Critics were mixed, though audiences turned out, and its legacy is mostly as a hinge. Disney announced its purchase of Pixar in January 2006, and Pixar's Ed Catmull and John Lasseter took over creative leadership of Disney Animation. Disney's in-house CG tradition eventually produced Tangled, Frozen and Moana.
