On March 30, 1981, just 69 days into his presidency, Ronald Reagan walked out of the Washington Hilton Hotel following a speech to a labor union and was shot by 25-year-old John Hinckley Jr. A .22-caliber bullet struck the president in the chest, ricocheting off his seventh rib and coming to rest an inch from his heart.
