April 16: An Accidental Trip, A Campus Shattered, Hip-Hop's Highest Honor

A date of discovery, devastation, and the recognition of an art form that refused to be dismissed

Some of history's most consequential moments arrive without announcement — in the middle of an ordinary afternoon in a Basel laboratory, in the terrible stillness of a April morning on a Virginia college campus, in the deliberations of a prize committee that decided, after decades of looking away, that it was time to pay attention. April 16 is a date of thresholds crossed: a chemist stumbled through a door in human perception that had never been opened before; a university community was shattered in ways that forced a nation to confront questions it had been avoiding; and a musician from Compton carried hip-hop into a room where it had never been invited and changed, permanently, the definition of what American music is allowed to be.

The Bicycle Ride That Changed Everything

On April 16, 1943, Albert Hofmann, a 37-year-old chemist at Sandoz Laboratories in Basel, Switzerland, was synthesizing derivatives of lysergic acid when he accidentally absorbed a small amount of a compound he had first created five years earlier — lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD-25 — through his fingertips. Within forty minutes he was experiencing dizziness, visual disturbances, and a sensation of profound disorientation unlike anything in the pharmacological literature. He left work early and rode his bicycle home through the streets of Basel, accompanied by a laboratory assistant — a journey that became known, in the psychedelic community, as "Bicycle Day," the first deliberate experience of LSD-induced consciousness in human history. What Hofmann had stumbled into was a compound of extraordinary potency: active at doses measured in micrograms, capable of producing hours of profound perceptual and psychological alteration, and unlike anything that had been synthesized before.

The decades that followed Hofmann's accidental discovery were turbulent in ways he had not anticipated. Through the 1950s and early 1960s, LSD was studied seriously by psychiatrists and researchers who believed it might have genuine therapeutic applications — for alcoholism, for anxiety, for end-of-life distress. The CIA, characteristically, explored it as a potential tool of interrogation and mind control in the covert program known as MK-Ultra. By the mid-1960s, it had escaped the laboratory entirely and become the sacrament of the counterculture, associated with the music, politics, and consciousness-expansion movements that defined that decade. It was made illegal in the United States in 1968. Hofmann, who lived to be 102, spent the latter decades of his life advocating for responsible research into psychedelics and expressing dismay at what he called his "problem child." In the twenty-first century, serious clinical research into LSD and related compounds has resumed at institutions including Johns Hopkins and NYU, exploring the very therapeutic applications that the original researchers had identified — bringing the story, in its strange way, back toward the laboratory where it began.

Blacksburg

On the morning of April 16, 2007, a 23-year-old student at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University opened fire in two separate locations on campus in Blacksburg, Virginia, killing 32 people and wounding 17 others before taking his own life. It was, at the time, the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman in American history. The first attack occurred in a dormitory at 7:15 a.m.; the second, more devastating assault took place in Norris Hall, an engineering building, more than two hours later, by which time university officials had sent an email alert to the campus community that many students and faculty had not yet seen. Thirty of the thirty-two victims died in Norris Hall, in classrooms, as their professors in several cases stood in doorways attempting to shield them. The names of the dead spanned five continents of origin and ranged in age from 18 to 76.

The aftermath unfolded on multiple levels simultaneously. The grief of the Virginia Tech community — expressed in the spontaneous memorial of stones that gathered on the Blacksburg drillfield, in the candlelight vigils, in the faces of students who had lost classmates and professors they loved — was met with an outpouring of solidarity from around the world. The policy debates that followed were as fierce and unresolved as those that had followed every mass shooting before it, and those that would follow every one after: about gun access, about campus security protocols, about the failures of the mental health system that had failed to intervene despite documented warning signs. The university community that was broken on April 16, 2007, rebuilt itself — not by forgetting, but by choosing, deliberately and publicly, to carry the names of its dead forward.

DAMN. — And the Door Opens

On April 16, 2018, the Pulitzer Prize Board announced that Kendrick Lamar had been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his 2017 album DAMN. — making him the first artist outside the classical and jazz genres ever to receive the honor in its seventy-five-year history. The citation described the album as "a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life." DAMN. had already won the Grammy for Best Rap Album and generated widespread critical acclaim for its dense, allusive songwriting — an album that moved between themes of faith, mortality, street violence, and Black identity with a literary sophistication that reviewers had consistently reached for literary analogies to describe. The Pulitzer Board, whose music prize had previously honored composers like John Adams, Henry Threadgill, and Caroline Shaw, was now saying that Kendrick Lamar belonged in that company.

The significance of the award extended well beyond the individual recognition. Hip-hop had spent four decades being dismissed by cultural gatekeepers as commercially driven, lyrically shallow, or simply not serious — an attitude that had persisted even as the genre produced artists of undeniable craft and influence, and even as it became the dominant popular music form in the United States and much of the world. The Pulitzer Board's decision was an acknowledgment, long overdue, that the standards by which American music was being evaluated had been too narrow — that a form rooted in Black American experience and oral tradition, in sampling and flow and the architecture of the street corner, was as capable of producing work of lasting artistic consequence as any conservatory-trained composer. Lamar accepted the prize with characteristic restraint. The door his award opened, however, was anything but quiet — it was, in the language of his own work, exactly the kind of humble that changes everything.
